Hermes finds Persephone as Hades' queen, and though conflicted about leaving Hades, she returns with Hermes. But because she had eaten in the underworld - pomegranite seeds - she must return to the underworld every autumn and return topside in spring. During Persephone's absence, Demeter looses all interest in her duties as Goddess of Agriculture. | c.550 |  ASPIS (hoplon) SHIELD is used in Greece. A deep-dished round shield made primarily of wood, at least 0.91m diameter, weighed @7.3kg, @25-38mm thick. Some have a thin sheet of bronze on the outer face, often just around the rim. Earlier ones have a single strap grasped by the left hand and a broad belt passed round the left shoulder, so as to throw the weight on the body and thus relieve the arm. Later shields are generally smaller, and managed by 2 handles, the left hand being thrust thru the first so as to grip the second. 5th-4th century aspises are decorated by emblems usually chosen by the state. Sicyon used the sigma (Σ). The Spartan lambda (Λ), for Lacedaemon is most known. From late 5th cent., Athenian hoplites commonly used the owl. Shields of Theban hoplites sometimes used a sphinx, or the club of Heracles. The revolutionary part of the shield is the Argive grip. It placed the handle at the edge of the shield, and was supported by a leather forearm strap at the center. |
