c. 600  Homeric Hymn to Demeter  written by an anonymous author, who appears to be acting within both epic and local - Eleusinian - traditions.  It is usually 2nd of the 33 Homeric hymns.  Persephone, dau of Zeus & Demeter, us kidnapped by Hades, and taken to the Underworld.  Demeter searches the Earth for her, having many adventures.  She teaches the secrets of agriculture to Triptolemus.  She ends in Eleusis, and commands that a temple be built to her, and that they teach the world her secret to immortality.  Demeter goes home to Zeus and demands that Persephone be found at once.  Zeus sends Hermes to retrieve Persephone.  Hermes finds Persephone as Hades' queen, and though conflicted about leaving Hades, she returns with Hermes.  But because she had eaten in the underworld - pomegranite seeds - she must return to the underworld every autumn and return topside in spring.  During Persephone's absence, Demeter looses all interest in her duties as Goddess of Agriculture.  The original story is earlier, because Persephone is mentioned as a dreaded underworld force in the Iliad & Odyssey. 650 wikEM
